91勛圖厙 Success for Boherbue CS

Boherbue Comprehensive School (BCS) and Colaiste Chraoi Naofa (CCN) met on Tuesday May 5th in the TUS 91勛圖厙 U15 Hurling Development Competition.

CCN won the toss and decided to take advantage of the light breeze in the opening half. It was BCS that took the lead inside two minutes with a fine strike from Darragh Cronin on the halfway line. However, CCN got on top in the middle of the field through Daniel Ring and Joe Coughlan and took some excellent scores from distance, moving into a 0-6 to 0-1 lead after fifteen minutes.

Jack ONeill (CCN) and Darragh Cronin (BCS) swapped points before BCSs Shane OSullivan fired home one handed after a charging run from his centre back position. Just minutes later O’Sullivan, now repositioned at centre forward, pinged a pass to full forward Evan Biggane who levelled the game with a brilliantly taken goal leaving the score 2-2 to 0-8.

Chroi Naofas ONeill quickly replied with a well taken point from the wing, but this was quickly cancelled out by Cathal Hegarty from midfield. From the next play CCN but together a fine passage of play leading to a goal from Jack ONeill, bouncing the ball in front of, and then passed BCS goalkeeper Cian OConnor. BCSs Hegarty reduced the deficit to two with a free won by corner forward Cillian Corbett. The half ended with a long ball from the excellent CCN keeper, Carthach Kelleher inside the Boherbue thirteen metre line. The loose ball eventually cleared by some brave defending by BCS wing backs Daniel Linehan and Sean OSullivan. With that the ref blew the half-time whistle, CCN taking a two-point advantage into the break, 1-9 to 2-4.

On the recommencement, it was BCS that commanded proceedings with the strong running Michael Farrissey quickly putting two goals past Kelleher following great work from midfielder Padraig OConnell, and Shane OSullivan. CCN battled hard but could not penetrate a strong full backline of Daire OKeeffe, Liam OSullivan and Captain Aidan Keohane. This led to some long-range shooting from CCN, some falling to OConnor in goal whose radar was fixed all day on the 64 OSullivan at centre forward who had a hand in most of BCSs second half scores, finding the net again himself late on.

Hegarty landed another placed ball after some dogged work by Conor ORegan out on the wing. CCNs Dara OConnell took a fine point from halfway while his captain Joe Coughlan was denied by the upright. The game’s final score came from a thundering run by BCSs OConnell up the wing brushing off several CCN defenders before passing to Biggane who picked out corner forward Sean Dan Cahill to raise the white flag. Boherbues eye for goal proved the difference on the day, winning out on a scoreline of 6-11 to 1-13 bringing the school its first 91勛圖厙 hurling title.
